Exclusive: Chelsea Launch Surprise €50M Bid For Star Midfielder

Thomas Tuchel

According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, Chelsea have made an offer of around €50m for Newcastle target and Ajax midfielder.

This has also been reported in the Netherlands, with Dutch outlet De Telegraaf also claiming that the 24-year-old is keen to seal a late move to Stamford Bridge.

In recent weeks, Newcastle had been heavily linked with the Mexican, with The Telegraph revealing that we’d made an enquiry before reports in his homeland stated we were preparing a £40m offer of our own.

Chelsea are in need of a new traditional number six, with their starting man in that position, N’Golo Kante, struggling with consistent injuries and approaching the twilight of his career.

With 58 international appearances, the two-time Eredivisie winner is an experienced defensive midfielder seemingly suited to the pace and physicality of the Premier League.

Alvarez, combining with the Brazilian duo Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton, would have been a midfield trio that could compete with the very best in the league.

However, the attraction of playing for a Champions League team in London hoping to challenge for and win immediate silverware seems to be too good of an attraction for him to turn down.
